Credit cards are an attractive mode of payment as they let you buy first and pay later. In case you are to face a financial crunch, a credit card would allow you to pay for any emergency expenses. Moreover, by using credit cards to pay for your transactions, you can also earn reward points, which can be redeemed on gifts and vouchers, among other attractive benefits.
Even as credit cards seem to be an enticing offering, they come with a joining fee. When you are applying for a credit card for the first time, you might not want to pay the joining fees on the card. But can you get a credit card for free?
Yes, you can! Here are a few ways that would let you avail your first credit card free of cost:
Apply for an Add-on Card
Supplementary credit cards are available with most credit cards. If your parent or your spouse or any other family member has a credit card, you could ask them to apply for an add-on card. Banks allow add-on cards for family members of the cardholder. These add-on cards are usually free of cost. In some credit cards, though, there might be a charge involved, but this is payable by the primary credit cardholder.
You would, therefore, have to pay no fees or charges to get your first credit card. You can enjoy the same rewards and benefits applicable on the primary card and perhaps also a credit limit equal to the primary card (this is usually the case with most banks).
Look for Zero-fee Cards
There are many credit cards in the market which have no joining fee or annual fee. You can search for such cards and avail them without paying a penny in fees. You can ask your bank for such cards. Many, including SBI, HDFC, ICICI, Axis etc. offer this facility. If you have been a long-standing customer of the bank, they might offer you one.
Moreover, some credit cards are offered against deposits. If you make a fixed deposit with a bank or financial institution, the institution might offer you a free card. The deposit itself will be credited to you either after a period of time or after you make a certain number/quantity of transactions. Look for these options - they could help you get a card free of cost.
Do Maximum Transactions After Availing the Card
Under almost all types of credit cards, there is a spending-based fee reversal facility. Under this facility, if you spend a specified amount of money by transacting with the card, the initial fee is reversed. For this reversal, you are required to make transactions of a specified amount within the first 45-90 days of availing the card. If you do so, the card becomes practically free. (In case of annual fee, the annual transactions are considered. If your annual transactions cross a specified limit, the annual fee is also waived off.)
Don't forget that while there are ways to get a credit card free of cost, getting a credit card itself depends on whether or not you're eligible for it. This depends on your salary, your credit rating, the number of loans you've availed, the bank you choose etc.
These are the main ways of getting your first credit card free of cost. Which one are you going to choose?
