Editor's Comment: The Supreme Court allows RCom to sell telecom assets worth INR181bn to Reliance Jio. Transaction will help RCom reduce its debt by half while granting crucial infrastructure & spectrum to Reliance Jio. All proceeds of sale to clear dues outstanding since June 2017.

 

Panel drafting government's cloud computing policy pushes for data generated in India to be stored in India. Panel headed by Infosys co-founder Kris Gopalakrishnan said a "forward looking" data protection regime was needed as country's IT laws framework was "not sufficient" for cloud computing. Move could increase costs for global tech giants Amazon, Google, and Microsoft, thereby affecting prices for end-users as well.

Adani Group wins licence to sell gas in 11 cities for household and vehicle usage. Adani to sell gas on its own in 6 cities and as part of a JV with Indian Oil Corporation in the remainder 5 cities. Torrent Gas, Bharat Gas Resources, and GAIL Gas also gain licenses.

 

US unemployment rate drop below 4%, adding 157,000 new jobs in July but below consensus forecast of 190,000. Employers bulked up more than expected in May and June as the economy expands.
