Locked down in our homes as the world fights against an invisible enemy, many of us have joined WhatsApp groups and other communities online that organise online games such as Epic Games' Fortnite, Crossy Road, Lego Marvel Superheroes, PUBG and so on .

While for most of us it may simply be a means to kill the extra time on our hands or get that adrenaline rush during a rather mundane day, for some others it has become a source of their livelihood.

Gaming apps and websites that let people compete against strangers for cash are booming. They are witnessing a surge among new and existing users as many seek to make money sitting at home while waiting out the health crisis, all of it while doing something they enjoy and are really good at.

Many of these players are also those who have been laid off their jobs in the wake of the pandemic.

One 29-year-old Cleveland resident typically wagers $45 a match using an app called Play One Up. Last month, he netted roughly $1,600 in winnings.

Play One Up reported hosting 10,000 one-on-one matches last month where people competed for cash. This is twice as many as a typical month.

Players’ Lounge, another app for wagering on one’s ability to win at competitive games, saw a 70% increase in matches and a 50% increase in new users.

Games in which people can go head-to-head vary by app and include hits such as Fortnite, Call of Duty and FIFA. The amount of money people can wager also varies from $5 to $10,000 and might depend on a player’s skill level or how long they have been a user.

Amid this exhilaration, the apps generate revenue by taking a small percentage of wagers or through advertising and sponsorships.

Sounds like a win-win deal? It definitely does...except for the losers, of course!
