Crew Dragon Capsule Launch: NASA SpaceX First Crew Launch to the International Space Station

Jun 3, 2020 9:30 AM 5 min play

In a first, NASA astronauts on Saturday were launched from American soil in a commercially built and operated American crew spacecraft on its way to the International Space Station (ISS). Called Demo-2, this mission is the first crewed test flight of the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft, following the Crew Dragon's Demo-1 mission last year.

The launch becomes all the more significant as it marks the launch of humans into orbit from US soil for the first time in nearly a decade.

The SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule carrying NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley lifted off at 3:22 p.m. EDT Saturday on the company’s Falcon 9 rocket from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The crew entered the ISS on Sunday after a landmark 19-hour journey - marking the completion of the first leg of the trip, designed to test the capabilities of the Crew Dragon capsule. But the mission will only be declared a success when the astronauts return safely to Earth in a few months' time.

How closely have you followed the NASA SpaceX first crew launch? Let's find out. We also cover some wider space stuff...because you know...the more the merrier.

Here's a teaser:
